Installation of a new sink in the water supply line

Locating the sink

Hold the sink against the wall and mark the new mounting points. This may require an extra pair of hands. Make sure the sink is level and at the correct height.

Installing the faucets and drain

Be sure to install the supplied washers in the appropriate locations. These are used to cushion the faucet against the surface of the sink to prevent damage. Check the direction of the faucet before final tightening. Do not apply excessive pressure or the basin may break.

Insert the drain spigot into the basin and secure it. Some drains are mounted on a rubber gasket – others require a sealant or silicone sealant. Check the recommendations. This provides a seal so that water is directed inside the drain pipe and not out.

Some modern faucets come with small drain pipes that are installed at the same time as the faucets. If this is not the case, you can make the installation much easier if you connect a short piece of copper pipe to each faucet at this time. This can then be connected to the mains later. The advantage is that you can install the faucets while the sink is on the floor, and you have plenty of room to work. If the sink is mounted on the wall, connecting the pipes to the faucets can be very cumbersome. These branches can be carefully shaped before connection to ensure that they match the supply pipes.

Fixing the sink and connecting the pipes

Move the sink into position and secure it with the appropriate brackets and screws. Most brackets have a rubber gasket through which the screw passes. This prevents the basin from cracking when the screws are tightened.

Now connect the hot and cold water pipes to the previously installed fittings. The type of connection (soldered or pressed) depends on your preference, but keep the heat away from the basin. You can also take this opportunity to install a small shut-off valve. This can serve as a connector and also gives you the option of shutting off the supply line later.
